October Chimes
Dear siblings in Christ,
In a recent Gospel reading in church, Jesus taught his disciples that if we welcome others in his name, we welcome him. In this particular story, Jesus was referring to welcoming children, but of course our welcome doesn’t stop at a specific age. In welcoming others, we welcome Christ, because each one of us bears the image of Christ within us.
In the very first story in the Bible, the story of creation, we see this beautiful piece of ourselves as God creates the first, prototypical humans. In God’s image, he created them, both male and female, Gensis tells us. Each of us--no matter who we are, how old we are, what our gender is, whatever station in life we find ourselves—each of us bears God’s creative and redeeming image in our very being.
I’m excited to share that St. Paul’s will be hosting our synod’s event celebrating this very fact: In God’s Image, a day filled with worship, fellowship, and workshops, honoring the beautiful diversity of humanity, and our call to welcome, include, and celebrate all those created in God’s image. This event focuses especially on the LGBTQIA+ community, and the ways the church can truly be welcoming and inclusive.
In God’s Image is being held on Saturday, October 12 from 9:00-2:00, and will kick off with a festive worship service. Our new bishop, Bryan Penman, will be presiding, and the Rev. Dr. Karyn Wiseman, professor of homiletics at United Lutheran Seminary will be preaching.
All are welcome to attend this day of learning. You can register to attend at ministrylink.org/events/in-gods-image-3. St. Paul’s also needs some volunteers to help us host (directing folks to different rooms, serving coffee, etc.). If you’d like to volunteer, there’s no need to register—just let me know!
I invite each of you to be a part of our mission to welcome others into our community, embodying the love and acceptance that Christ exemplifies. Whether you join us for the event, volunteer your time, or simply spread the word, your participation is vital in creating an inclusive space where everyone feels valued and loved. Together, let us celebrate the diversity of God’s creation and reaffirm our commitment to welcoming all individuals as they are. Your presence and support can make a profound difference in the lives of others, reflecting the welcoming spirit of Christ in our midst. Let’s unite in this beautiful mission—together, we can build a church that truly reflects God’s inclusive love!
In Christ,
Pastor Laura
